It’s mid-January and you’re still feeling excited about your goals! You’ve completed your business plan, started getting to work on your first 90-day plan and excitement is high. But what happens when you start losing motivation and get distracted?
This has happened in my own life and comes up for my clients often. We get excited, but then we get distracted. Life happens–the kids get sick, the workload becomes bigger, and unexpected things come up. There are always distractions in life that can pop up and get in the way. Sometimes when this happens we let go of our big, dreamy goals that we set for ourselves in the beginning of the year. I don’t want that to happen to you this year, so let’s dig into how we can untangle from distractions and create consistency.
Ninety percent of the results you generate are in showing up. It’s not about doing everything perfectly or getting it right, or knowing how. But if 90% of your results are in just showing up all that’s left is 10%. What does this mean? It means that commitment and consistency play a huge role in your goals!
Let’s use working out as an example. We decide to join a gym, but then things come up. We get out of work late, the kids have activities, and we don’t get in the consistent workouts that we wanted to. How can we avoid this? Commit to showing up 5 days a week for just 5 minutes. It doesn’t seem like much right? But if we keep this commitment to ourselves we build trust with ourselves, we stop judging ourselves, and we keep that goal instead of just giving up.
If you just show up, you are 90% of the way there.
Here are 3 tips for showing up consistently:
- Commit before you know how – When you’re talking about a goal or something that lights you up I want you to commit before you know how you’ll get there. What is it that you really want and not what you think you can have? Admit what you really want. You likely don’t know how to get there, but the commitment comes first. The “how” is the other 10%.
- Once you’ve committed, take the next right action – You don’t have to have A-Z planned. Start with the next right action that can move you one step closer to that goal. Hire a coach, google how to do it, whatever it is just take that next action because it will lead you to the next one. Some days it will be a small step and some days it will be a big one.
- Take action based on commitment, not on feelings – How often do you get really excited about your goal, but you wake up one day and then you don’t feel like it? Don’t let yourself off the hook when your critter brain comes into play. Show up for yourself every single day.
